Frequently Asked Questions
How to check if shock absorbers need replacing?
You can check if your shock absorbers need replacing with the “push-down” bounce test. This entails repeatedly pushing down on the car’s bonnet or boot while it’s on a flat surface. If the body of the car bounces up and down once you have let go, it probably need new shocks.
How much does shock absorber replacement cost?
Shock replacement costs depend on the type of unit required and whether you need to pay extra fees to a supplier or the auto repair shop. However, the shock absorber price range for a standard passenger vehicle is usually between R700 to R2000.
How long does it take to change shock absorbers?
Changing shock absorbers usually takes 1 – 2 hours. It depends on whether the vehicle has both front shocks and rear shocks attached to the shock absorber mounts. If you don’t need to repair the full vehicle suspension system (including shock mounting, bushings and ball joints), the car’s shock absorbers can be replaced in less than an hour.
Can shock absorbers be repaired?
Depending on the type of shock absorber, they either can or cannot be repaired. You typically need a shock absorber with a corresponding strut and coil spring to consider repairs. KYB offers premium shocks and struts, making it easy to buy specific repair parts if needed.

When should shock absorbers be replaced?
Car shocks should typically be replaced every 4 – 8 years. If you notice the car isn’t riding smoothly or that the coil spring compressor is rusty/dented, it probably needs replacing. We recommend checking your shocks every 20 000km.
Should shock absorbers be replaced in pairs?
To maintain the balance of the vehicle, worn shock absorbers should be replaced in pairs. Both of the old shocks usually wear out at the same time which means you can intuitively replace them in pairs. However, if one shock is more worn out than the other, we still advise replacing both if possible.
Can shock absorbers leak?
Shock absorbers can leak and it’s certainly not a good sign. It means the seals of the shock absorber are brittle or torn. If you notice either the front or rear shock absorbers leaking, we recommend replacing them to preserve your vehicle’s tyres and maintain a smooth ride.
Do shock absorbers wear out?
Shock absorbers usually wear out over 4 – 8 years for daily-use vehicles. However, if you are gentle on your brake pads, you can extend the life of both rear and front shock absorbers by several months.
